Board Elections: Expectations and Process

Each year, BGBG holds elections for new board members, who serve for two years. BGBG seeks qualified BGBG members who are dedicated to advancing the craft of green building in Boulder County and passionate about leading this organization to the next level.  There will be 4 seats open in the 2010 election. Deadline for Applications December 31, 2009

We are particularly interested in having members with any of  following skill set/expertise run in 2010:

• Legal
• Organizational/Business Development
• Educational
• Fundraising
• Marketing
• Architecture

As a trade organization, balanced industry-sector participation is an important way we address our members’ needs. BGBG strives to have the following backgrounds represented on the board of directors:

Building Science	New Home Construction	Landscaping
Architecture	Non-Profit Experience	Home Remodeling
Interior Design	Local Government/Policy	Commercial Remodeling
Marketing	Real Estate Sales	Business Management/Finance Experience/Access to Funding

Important questions to ask yourself when deciding if this opportunity is right for you:

• Are you really excited and passionate about BGBG’s mission?
• Are you motivated to be directly involved with growing the organization and identifying and pursuing ways in which to implement our mission?
• Are you interested in thinking strategically about the organization’s future?
• Are you a team player?
• Do you have specific skills or partnership and leveraging connections that you would bring to the position? (Skills that are particularly beneficial include: financial management, strategic planning, marketing, fundraising, and non-profit development experience.)
• Are you willing to spend the time it requires to be a fully participating board member (see Expectations outlined below.)
• Are you up for having fun doing it?

Expectations for BGBG Board Members:

• 2-year term beginning in February
  
• 80 percent attendance at monthly board meeting (4th Thursday of the month, 4-6pm)
  
• Attendance at 2 full day retreats (March 6th 2010 and one in September date tbd)
  
• Attendance at the first Board meeting in February which will be 4-7pm
  
• Participation on at least one BGBG committee that meets monthly
• Willingness to follow through on committee activities
• Ensure committee work is in line with and supportive of the BGBG mission
• Report committee updates during board meetings
• Attend at least 6 brownbag events a year
• Attend the Annual Board Meeting and the Board Retreat
• Commitment to get obtain one new sponsor each year
  
• Willingness to be an officer for the board, including president, secretary, or treasure

Process for electing board member elections:

• During the November or December we will put out a call for applications
• Send your bio and a completed application (see below)
• Candidates are expected to attend the annual meeting held in January to make a two-minute statement to our members
• Voting will take place via an online survey tool after the meeting
• The results will be communicated during the first brownbag in February

Note: Please note the following Board meeting dates and only apply if you can commit to attending these meetings:

1. Annual Member Meeting: Still TBD but will be in mid to late January. Applicants must be prepared to give a 2 minute presentation to the members.
   1st Board meeting:  February 25th 3pm - 6pm (Note, this meeting is scheduled for 3 hours)
2. 1st Retreat: Saturday, March 6, 2010 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
3. 2nd Retreat: Saturday, September 11, 2010 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
4. Monthly Board Meetings: 4th Thursday of the month 4 - 6pm at REI in Boulder
