world, and is one of Boulder's leaders in Building Science. He is currently completing a deep green retrofit of his own
home, and exploring how to make sustainability truly affordable for
everyone.
Advance Indoor Air Quality
In the race to save energy and reduce carbon builders and
remodelers are running into many problems faced in the early ‘80s by the
response to the first “practice” energy crisis. Homes were insulated at higher
levels, air leakage reduced dramatically, and indoor air quality problems
skyrocketed. In a recent building science conference the focus was on deep
energy retrofits and much to the chagrin of the EPA IAQ program manager, indoor
air quality was only mentioned in regard to preventing mold. There are many
aspects to indoor quality both biological and chemical.
The workshop will look at all aspects of indoor
environmental quality from daylighting to comfort, chemical issues related to
building products and finishes, mold and prevention strategies, and how to know
whether you have done the job, testing and analysis. EPA is introducing new
programs that will be incorporated in the workshop including the new “mold
certification” requirements facing all remodelers.
Join David Johnston for this action packed, fun filled day
on the dirtiest little secrets in the building industry.

Green Building Practices and Certification
Green Building Practices and Certification is a 2-day training geared toward builders, architects, contractors and trades people who need a more in-depth understanding of how to build green and how to meet city of Boulder Green Points, and Boulder County BuildSmart green building codes. Participants will learn how to approach a home from the green building mindset. Students learn to view a home in terms of interrelated systems. From foundations to flooring, from roofs to HVAC systems, students learn that all aspects of design and construction must function together in order to build a green home.
The Green Building Tripod guides every design decision and construction detail. The Tripod consists of:
- Energy-Efficiency
- Resource Conservation
- Indoor Air Quality
We will emphasize the best available green building practices available for implementation and build professionals' capacity to retrofit homes and build new homes to be more energy efficient, improve indoor air quality and enhance the environmental performance with various levels of sophistication. This class will build upon the introductory class or be the next step for those professionals who have had a basic 101 green building training previously.
Upon completion of this training, attendees will have the opportunity to take a certification test through GreenAdvantage for an additional $175 fee. The test will be given locally and is scheduled for soon after this training.
About the Trainer
David Johnston, President,
What's Working, LLC, has been training the residential building industry for 30 years. Skilled as a communicator, teacher and trainer, David is able to communicate with people from a variety of professional and non-professional backgrounds and inspire them to build and live green. He was an award-winning remodeling contractor in the Washington DC metro area for 10 years.
Johnston is relentless in his drive for market transformation in cities, counties and states in the US and Canada. He conducts training for hundreds of building industry professionals each year and is one of the founding trainers for the Green Advantage Certification for green builders. While developing different green building programs around the nation, Johnston has incorporated a wide ranging set of experiences and a wealth of knowledge to the benefit of the building professionals he trains. One of the purposes of his training seminars is to share this vast knowledge with his audience while making the trainings specific to what they can do differently Monday morning. Primarily, he teaches people not to see different parts of the building industry as independent and siloed, but as a whole, and also how this whole fits into the larger community. He not only teaches how to connect the dots, but also what directions to take, what next steps are in order, and how to get from here to there.
